Customs JIAP foils bid to smuggle foreign currency to Thailand

KARACHI: Customs Collectorate of Preventive team deputed at Jinnah International Airport foiled smuggling of foreign currency as well as gold worth millions of rupees and arrested three culprits.

According to the details, on the tip off by higher authorities, Deputy Collector Customs, Jinnah International Airport (JIAP) team posted at International Departure intercepted a passenger namely Israr Muhammad and inquired regarding the travel documents whereas complete search of the luggage was also carried out on suspicion.

During the search the customs team recovered gold weighing 1350 grams, silver jewelry (20 tolas) as well as artificial stones along with assorted foreign currency $11,250.

The culprit Israr Muhammad was boarding for Thailand through flight no TG-508 from Karachi. The seized smuggled gold and foreign currency is said to be of worth Rs10m in the market. The accused person was arrested and FIR lodged to unmask the real faces behind this attempt.

Earlier 17,140 USD and 840 HKD were recovered from a passenger namely Abdul Karim s/o Muhammad Idrees who was leaving for Dubai through flight no EK-605. The culprit was arrested after lodging an FIR.

In third attempt, another currency seizure made at Departure of Jinnah International Airport. Foreign currency was recovered from a passenger namely Mohammed Nawaz s/o Muhammad Shafi. As per preliminary investigation, passenger stated that he lived in Milano, Italy for 15 years. He came from Islamabad to take flight of Thai Airways to visit Thailand as he buys artificial jewelry from Thailand and sells in Italy. The currency seized is estimated at 14,150 Euros in the international market.
