Hungary is in talks for cooperation with Trieste port as the project for the participation of the country in the construction of a second track of the railway line linking the Divaca hub in Slovenia to Koper port may fail, foreign minister Peter Szijjarto said.

“We are in serious negotiations with Trieste, since we have heard that certain political forces in Slovenia do not want to cooperate with us, but this is not a problem. It is your country and you have to decide for yourself,” Szijjarto said in an interview for the Slovenian public broadcaster RTV SLO.

Hungary may not be involved in the Slovenian project, so it turns elsewhere, Szijjarto said, “We are very seriously negotiating and we have almost reached an agreement”, he added.

The railway line linking the Divaca hub in Slovenia to Koper port has been long delayed but currently has the go-ahead. Some other countries in the region have been keen to participate in some way, viewing the increase in railway cargo capacity with Koper port as a way to increase trade, particularly with Asian countries including China. Koper is a leading North Adriatic port for trade with China using it to deliver goods into Europe as part of the new Silk Road.
