Customs Court approves after arrest bail of suspect in betel nuts smuggling case

KARACHI: The Customs Court approved after arrest bail of suspect namely Farhan Ghouri son of Hafiz Ur Rehman against the surety of Rs 100,000 and directed him to appear before the court on next date of hearing, who is booked in a case of attempting to smuggle contraband betel nuts.

On June 18, 2019, counsel for the accused moved bail petition and argued that customs officials arrested his counsel in betel nuts smuggling case. He further argued that his counsel was booked falsely in this case, who is ready to submit surety before the court, therefore, court may grant his after arrest bail.

After the hearing, court granted his after arrest bail against the surety of Rs 100,000 and directed him to appear before the trial court on next date of hearing without fail.

After court hearing, suspect furnished surety and court issued clearance certificate and wrote a letter to Superintendent Central Jail Karachi to release him if he is not required in any other custody.

According to the prosecution, case was registered for violation of under section 2(s) 157 (2) of Customs Act, 1969 punishable under clause (89) of section 156 (i) ibid read with section 156 (2) of the Customs Act, 1969 further read with section 3 (1) of Imports & Export Control Act, 1950.
