Customs Court approves bail of suspect in mobile phones smuggling

KARACHI: The Customs Court granted after arrest bail to suspect namely Muhammad Omer son of Muhammad Akhtar, who was booked in a case of attempting to smuggle non-duty paid 63 foreign origin mobile phones.

On June 27, 2019, during the hearing, counsel for the accused moved after arrest bail application and argued that his client is innocent and has been falsely implicated in this case, who is ready to furnish surety, therefore, court may grant his post arrest bail.

After the hearing, court granted his bail against the surety of Rs 100,000 and directed him to appear before the court on next date otherwise bail can be cancelled.

According to the first information report (FIR), on credible information, customs teams searched Muhammad Omer holding Pakistani Passport arrived from Dubai by Emirates flight no 602 and diverted to scanning machine for scanning the luggage.

He further submitted that the team during the examination of black color hand bag in presence of two musheers recovered 30 LG mobile phones model no LGF320L, 20 LG Mobile Black model no LGF320 and 13 Samsung mobile phones model no 30 W8 worth Rs 1,428,000.

He argued that during the search, he was asked to produce lawful documents of goods, however, he failed to produce any lawful documents, therefore, after the formalities, goods were seized and he was also arrested.

Investigation officer stated that one suspect namely Ali Raza is still absconder in this case and prosecution is trying its best for his arrest and he will be produced before the court when arrested.

According to the prosecution, case was registered for violation of under section 2(s) 157 (2) of Customs Act, 1969 punishable under clause (89) of section 156 (i) ibid read with section 156 (2) of the Customs Act, 1969 further read with section 3 (1) of Imports & Export Control Act, 1950.
