Custom JIAP recovers gold ornaments worth Rs7.7m from Dubai bound passenger

KARACHI: Collectrate of Customs Preventive team deputed at international departure lounge of Jinnah International Airport (JIAP) foiled another attempt of gold smuggling.

Sources told Customs Today that on the tip-off by higher authorities, the staff of customs intercepted a lady passenger on suspicion and asked for the checking of the luggage whereas inquired regarding the travel documents.

The officer informed Custom Today that during the checking of the lady passenger who was wearing abaya, 1112 grams gold ornaments or 95 tolas worth Rs 7.7 million were recovered in semi-finished form.

The passenger lady, a resident of Hyderabad, was trying to fly to Dubai through Emirates Airline No EK-609 but the staff of customs posted at International Departure as well as Airport Security Force (ASF) timely stopped the lady passenger, added Customs officer.

Customs officer also informed that the gold smuggling in form of semi-finished jewelery is an emerging phenomenon to hoodwink Customs authorities ever since stringent controls have been ensured regarding foreign currency. FIR was lodged to trace out abettors/financers and collaborators involved in this type of smuggling.
