SEATTLE: Hackers accepted responsibility for a Christmas Day closure that crippled the Xbox Live and PlayStation Networks in the whole world.
The group calling itself “Lizard Squad” said on social media it shut the gaming systems down, preventing users from playing products online.
Microsoft and Sony, makers of Xbox and PlayStation respectively, had no comment. Throughout the day, it posted messages on Twitter that they were working on fixing the issue.
The outage proved frustrating for gamers at AFK Tavern in Everett, a business that caters to “geeks and gamers”.
“I figure, there’s people out there that’s mad at the world,” said Jeremy, while trying to log onto Xbox, “They just want to mess a good thing up.”
“Lizard Squad” has claimed responsibility for other hacks of PlayStation in the past. It said online Christmas it would reopen the online systems if people retweeted their messages.
Sony and Microsoft did not say whether their systems were actually hacked.
