Customs Court awards jail term to lady in gold smuggling case

KARACHI: The Customs Court awarded 30 days imprisonment to suspect lady namely Rizwana Naeem wife of Muhammad Naeem on pleading guilty, who was booked in a case of attempting to smuggle 1122 grams gold bangles.

On July 16, 2019, investigation officer of Customs Collectorate Jinnah International Airport submitted charge sheet against the above mentioned suspect lady and informed the court that on a credible information, strict surveillance was mounted and vigil eyes were kept on outgoing passengers, resultantly, a lady was on watch as she entered the hall, soon after her entry, as usual, she was taken to the lady passengers search cabin of ASF, where the personal search of the lady was conducted.

He further informed that, lady was leaving for Dubai by Emirates Airline. Accordingly lady was taken to search room along with the lady inspector preventive service, which resulted in the recovery of 6 gold bangles.

He said that after recovery of gold bangles from her it was felt imperative to conduct examination of her baggage, whereupon nothing objectionable was found, therefore, after the formalities, she was taken into custody and goods were also seized.

After the hearing, court accepted charge sheet, however, counsel for suspect lady moved an application for pleading guilty and left herself on the mercy of the court. Therefore, court awarded 30 days imprisonment to her and imposed fine of Rs 500,000.

According to the prosecution, case was registered for violation of under section 2(s) 157 (2) of customs act, 1969 punishable under clause (89) of section 156 (i) ibid read with section 156 (2) of the Customs Act, 1969 further read with section 3 (1) of Imports & Export Control Act, 1950.
