Customs Court approves physical remand of accused booked in betel nuts smuggling case

KARACHI: The Customs Court sent suspect namely Nazeer Ahmed son of Haji Muhammad Khan to customs department on physical remand who was booked in a case of attempting to smuggle betel nuts, tyres, curtain cloth etc.

On October 14, 2019, investigation officer of Customs Collectorate of Preventive produced the above mentioned suspect before the court and informed that on an actionable information, customs team intercepted YUTONG passenger bus Al-Mahmood coach bearing registration number BSA-8243 and during the search found 38 pp bags containing foreign origin betel nuts weighing 1259 kg worth Rs629,500. 30 bundles each containing 5 tyres total 150 tyres used of assorted brand origin and size, valuing of Rs. 939,000. 05 tyes HI-FLY brand new origin China Rs115,395. 06 rolls containing foreign origin curtain cloth weighing 156 kg valuing of Rs279,520.

He submits that prosecution needs further investigation from arrested accused for collection of other evidences. Therefore, court may send suspect to customs department on physical remand.

After the hearing, court sent him back to customs department on physical remand and directed investigation officer to produce him on next date of hearing along with progress report.

According to the prosecution, case was registered for violation of section 2(s) of the customs act, 1969 punishable under clauses (89) of section 156 (1) further read with section 156(2) ibid.
