Wheat exports reduces by 88.10pc in four months of FY2019-20

ISLAMABAD: Wheat exports during first four months of the current financial year FY2019-20 reduced by 88.10 per cent as compared to the exports during the corresponding period of the previous year.

About 48,081 metric tonnes of wheat valuing $11.442 million exported during the period from July-October, 2019 as against 456,689 metric tonnes worth $96.121 million of same period of last year.

However, during the period under review, exports of fruit grew by 3.72 per cent, whereas vegetables exports rose by 19 per cent, according to the data of the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).

About 198,803 metric tonnes of vegetables worth $56.439 million, exported in four months of current financial year, were recorded as compared to 219,714 metric tonnes valuing $47.426 million last year.

During the period under review, 163,110 metric tonnes of fresh fruit worth $134.455 million were exported as compared to 155,655 metric tonnes valuing $129.634 million last year.

The country fetched $129.655 million in the first four months of current financial year by exporting about 54,177 metric tonnes of fish, and other fish products as compared to the exports of 44,513 metric tonnes worth $109.776 million last year.

Meanwhile, the exports of meat and meat products witnessed 53.57 per cent increase in the same period, as compared to 27,554 metric tonnes of the above mentioned commodity worth $97.885 million exported which was recorded at 17,566 metric tonnes valuing $63.722 million in the same period last year.

It may be recalled here that food group exports from the country increased by 16.21 per cent, whereas imports of the food commodities into the country decreased by 20.34 per cent as compared to the corresponding period of the last year.

The imports of the food group reduced to $1.583 billion during the period from July-October, 2019-20 from $1.987 billion of the same period of the last year.
