KARACHI: The Customs Court has approved physical remand of suspect namely Ghulam Muhammad S/o Muhammad Usman and sent him back to customs department, who was booked in a case of attempting to smuggle spare parts, betel nuts, foreign origin cloth etc.
On 14 December 2019, investigation officer of customs preventive produced him before the court and informed that on an actionable information, customs officials intercepted a Hino Passenger Bus bearing registration number BSB-747 and during the search found betel nuts engine crankshaft, Red Bull energy drink, spare parts, plastic pati, foreign origin cloth, foreign origin blankets, cutch block etc.
He further submitted that after the search, he was asked to produce lawful document, however, he failed to produce any lawful document, therefore, he was arrested and goods were seized by customs officials.
He argued that suspect is involved in smuggling goods amounting to Rs7,893,000, prosecution needs further investigation for arrest of others, therefore, court may approve his physical remand.
After the hearing, court approved his remand and directed investigation officer to produce him on next date of hearing along with progress report.
According to the prosecution, case was registered for violation of under section 2(s) 157 (2) of customs act, 1969 punishable under clause (89) of section 156 (i) ibid read with section 156 (2) of the customs act, 1969 further read with section 3 (1) of imports & export control act, 1950.
