KARACHI: The Customs Court directed investigation officer of customs preventive to complete investigation against owner/ financer/ abettors/ associates who are involved in a case of attempting to smuggle 304,500 pouches (609) kg Zafrani brand gutkha made in India worth Rs6,090,000.
On 26 December 2019, investigation officer submitted first information report (FIR) and informed the court that on an actionable information customs officials raided a three story building situated in Patang Gali, Jodia Bazar, Karachi, at premises, no person was available at the place, however, during the search, customs officials found 22 PP bags containing 2900 packets (304,500 pouches 609 kg) of Zafrani brand Gutkha made in India total valuing of Rs. 6,090,000.
He submitted that as no one came forward to claim the ownership of impugned goods so recovered from the premises situated at Patang Gali neither any document to substantiate the lawful import/ purchase and storage of foreign origin impugned goods was produced, therefore, the impugned goods have been seized under section 168 of the customs act, 1969 in violation of section 2(s) of customs act, 1969 punishable under section 156 (1) (89) read with 156(2) ibid, further read with section 3(1) of import and export (control) act, 1950.
He said that notice under section 171 of customs act, 1969 has been displayed in notice board at customs house Karachi for the owners of the seized goods/ premises, efforts are underway to arrest the persons involved in the crime.
