3,000 Iran-bound containers stranded at Karachi port as Hormuz tensions disrupt shipping

KLANG: A COSCO-owned vessel TEU COSCO Pacific 062W has been forced to make an emergency port call after reportedly catching fire in the Arabian Sea.
According to Maritime Bulletin, the 10,000 TEU COSCO Pacific was en route from Port Klang, Malaysia, to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT), India, when a fire broke out in the cargo hold on January 4, 2020.
The ship was forced to call at the Port of Colombo, Sri Lanka, where it arrived on January 6, 2020, and the containers offloaded. As of January 7, 2020, it was still berthed at the Port of Colombo.
A statement issued by Orient Overseas Container Line (China) Company Limited stated that COSCO Pacific 062W was found smoked in cargo hold on the way from Port Kelang to Nhava Sheva on Jan 4, COSCO headquarters have decided to divert call to Colombo for emergency measure to discharge affected containers first, before approaching to Nhava Sheva.
Vessel berthed at Colombo on Jan 6 and discharged affected containers and their surrounding containers total 131 units (OOCL has 6 containers discharged as below).

Sound containers would be loaded back after survey. The company further stated that so far new schedule is not confirmed while the reason of the smoke is under investigation.
