Customs Court issues NBWs against absconding importers in sales tax evasion case

KARACHI: The Customs Court issued non-bailable warrants against absconding suspects’ owners/ directors of M/s Unico Printer, M/s Zawwar Enterprises, M/s Glaxy Traders, M/s Zeeshan Enterprises, M/s G.F Enterprises, M/s Pioner international and others in tax evasion of Rs5.744 million along with default surcharge under section 34 of the sales tax act 1990.

On 24 January 2020, investigation officer submitted challan against the above mentioned suspects and informed the court that during the investigation, is was revealed that there is no taxable supplies of taxable goods because the suppliers declare bogus/ fake purchases/ goods declarations in the sales tax returns, therefore, as per record/ facts no physical delivery of taxable goods, supplied to accused persons, primafacie there is only paper transaction between buyer & suppliers.

He said that accused persons initially paid Rs14,77,000 to department by way of pay order, the principle amount of Rs42,67,576 along with default surcharge under section 34 of the sales tax act, 1990 is still outstanding. Challan is submitted to the court for judicial proceedings.

After the hearing, court taken charge sheet into court record and issued non-bail able warrants against them for next date of hearing.

According to the prosecution, case was registered against them for violation of under section 2(3, 7) 2(9), 2(14) (a) 3,6,7,8 (1) (a) & (d) 8A, 22(1) and 73 of the sales tax act, 1990 punishable under section 33 (3) (5) (8) (11c) (13) (16) (18) ibid.
