Customs Court approves remand of suspect in contraband goods smuggling case

KARACHI: The Customs Court approved physical remand of suspect namely Ghulam Qadir son of Abdul Khaliq, driver and sent him to customs lock-up, who was arrested in a case of attempting to smuggle contraband goods.

On 21 February 2020, investigation officer of Customs Anti-Smuggling Organization produced the above mentioned suspect and informed the court that on actionable information, customs officials intercepted Bedford truck hearing registration number LES-09-4047 and during the search, recovered 280 pp bags foreign origin betel nuts total weighing 8,000 kg value of Rs6,400,000.

He further submitted that during the search, accused was asked to produce lawful documents, however, he failed to produce any lawful documents, therefore, after the formalities, goods was seized along with vehicle and accused was also taken into custody, he said that prosecution needs further investigation for arrest of owner/ financer/ associates who involved in this crime, therefore, court may approved his physical remand.

After the hearing, court approved his remand and directed investigation officer to produce him on next date of hearing along with progress report.

According to the prosecution, case was registered against them for violation of under section 2(3, 7) 2(9), 2(14) (a) 3,6,7,8 (1) (a) & (d) 8A, 22(1) and 73 of the sales tax act, 1990 punishable under section 33 (3) (5) (8) (11c) (13) (16) (18) ibid.
