Customs I&I seizes 11.8MT of Indian gutka, paan prag worth Rs127.5m

KARACHI: On the directions of Director Customs Intelligence and Investigation (I&I) Irfan Javed, Customs I&I team seized unprecedented amount (11.7 metric tons) of banned Indian origin gutka/paan prag of assorted brands worth Rs127.5 million.

According to the details, a credible information was received that huge quantity of banned/smuggled and non-duty paid Indian origin, gutka, paan prag etc was dumped at various premises along with Marriat Road, Karachi for onward disposal/sale in the market.

Pursuance to the above said information, a team of anti-smuggling staff was deputed to locate the premises and foil any attempt of sale of the smuggled goods.

Accordingly on 19.2.2020, anti-smuggling staff of the Directorate in coordination with Kharadar Police Station, took swift action and successfully recovered huge unprecedented quantity of Indian origin gutka/pan praag of assorted brands. Total quantity of the recovered goods comes around 11,870 kilograms i.e. 11.87 metric tons.

The recovered foreign origin gutka/pan praag etc. being smuggled, injurious to human health and liable to confiscation, was seized under section 168 of the customs act, 1969. Market value of the seized goods is Rs127.5 million (approx). Further action is still underway.
