LAHORE: The suspension of 100 mmcfd gas supply to textile industry by the SNGPL has resulted in the closure of one shift at the mills, leaving thousands of textile workers jobless across Punjab.

On the directions of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, the SNGPL had allocated 100mmcfd gas supply to Punjab-based textile industry but suspended it for the past seven days.

Expressing his resent over the situation, All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (Aptma) Chairman SM Tanveer expressed that suspension of 100 mmcfd gas supply to textile industry had been causing millions of dollars loss to the country. “The textile value chain is unable to meet commitments on orders from Europe and US after Christmas, depriving the country of valuable foreign exchange,” he pointed out.

Tanveer informed that the Punjab-based textile millers had taken a deep sigh of relief but it proved short-lived as the SNGPL had withdrawn supply seven days back, he added.
