Customs Preventive impounds non-duty paid blankets worth Rs36m

KARACHI: Collectorate of Customs Anti-Smuggling Organization (ASO) impounded huge quantity of non-duty paid blankets from a warehouse located in Shershah area.

According to sources Chief Collector Saifuddin Junejo who immediately after assuming the charge as chief collector directed to adopt zero tolerance policy against smuggling received credible information regarding presence of smuggled goods in Shershah area.

He directed Collector Customs Preventive to take necessary measures to recover smuggled blankets.  Collector Saquif Saeed immediately constituted an anti-smuggling squad. The anti-smuggling squad  raided the warehouse owned by Mohib-ur-Rehman.

The ASO staff recovered 60 tonnes of blankets, which has been cleared in the garb of used clothing and duty/taxes worth Rs2.5 million had been evaded on each container. The total evasion comes to Rs20 million.

The value of each container load is approximately Rs4.5 million, which takes the value of overall seizure to Rs36 million. The owners of the goods presented a 2018 GD in support of their claim of legal possession, which was not accepted by the ASO staff, as there was specific information of the goods being cleared through mis-declaration.

Customs Preventive team after registering a case started further investigations.
