Customs court approves bail of suspect in contraband goods smuggling case

KARACHI: The Customs Court granted after arrest bail to suspect namely Ghulam Qadir son of Abdul Khaliq against the surety of Rs100,000, who was arrested in a case of attempting to smuggle contraband goods.

On June 18, 2020, counsel for the accused appeared before the court and moved an application for after arrest bail and argued that his client is innocent and has been falsely implicated in this case, who is ready to face trail, therefore, court may grant his bail till final judgment in this case.

After the hearing, court granted his after arrest bail against the surety of Rs100,000 and directed him to appear before the court on next date of hearing without fail.

According to the prosecution, investigation officer of Customs Preventive Anti-Smuggling Organization submitted charge sheet before the court and informed that on an actionable information, customs officials intercepted Bedford truck hearing registration number LES-09-4047 and during the search, recovered 280 pp bags foreign origin betel nuts total weighing 8,000 kilograms value of Rs6,400,000.

He further submitted that during the search, accused was asked to produce lawful documents, however, he failed to produce any lawful documents, therefore, after the formalities, goods was seized along with vehicle and accused was also taken into custody.

After the hearing, court had approved charge sheet and adjourned the matter for regular hearing and copy supply, however, counsel for the accused moved an application for after arrest bail, court proceeded on bail application and issued notice to special prosecutor of customs department and called comments for next date of hearing.

According to the prosecution, case was registered against them for violation of under section 2(3, 7) 2(9), 2(14) (a) 3,6,7,8 (1) (a) & (d) 8A ,22(1) and 73 of the sales tax act, 1990 punishable under section 33 (3) (5) (8) (11c) (13) (16) (18) ibid.
