Customs Court awards jail term to accused in contraband goods smuggling case

KARACHI: The Customs Court convicted suspect Ali Akbar son of Hussain Buksh for two month imprisonment and imposed fine of Rs300,000, who were nominated in a case of attempting to smuggle 687 kg Indian origin gutkha.

“If the fine amount is not paid the accused shall receive simple imprisonment for six months more”, the court also mentioned in its order.

On 21 September  2020, the above mentioned suspect appeared before the court and submitted an application to plead guilty and left him-self on the mercy of the court.

After conviction, the court directed superintendent Central Jail Karachi to receive the said accused into your custody in the said jail, together with this warrant and he carry the aforesaid sentence into execution according to law, the conviction is awarded C class.

Earlier, investigation officer had submitted charge sheet and informed the court that on an credible information, customs officials intercepted a Toyota Land Gruiser V-8 bearing registration number BF-1808 and during the search recovered 493 kg Safina Brand Indian origin gutkha, 115 kg of Adaab brand Indian origin gutkha and 79 kg of JND brand Indian Gutkha totaling 65 pp bags containing 3250 packets weighing 687 kg gutlkha worth Rs5,915,000.

He further informed the court that after the formalities, customs officials seized the same and also taken into custody of Ali Akbar son of Hussain Buksh, however, above mentioned owner of seized goods vehicle and gutkha namely Riaz and associate/ financer of goods namely Abdul Waheed are still absconders in this case.

After the hearing, court approved a charge sheet against issued non-bail able warrants against absconding suspects Riaz and Abdul Waheed S/o Ghulam Haider.

According to the prosecution, case was registered complainant by Hassan Raza, of Customs Preventive for violation of under section 2(s) 157 (2) of customs act, 1969 punishable under clause (89) of section 156 (i) ibid read with section 156 (2) of the customs act, 1969.
