FRANCE: NASA recently released a new mobile app titled Space Station Research Explorer that gives detailed information about everything happening on the ISS.
Versions of the app are available for both Androids and IOS devices.
Aimed at informing people about the functions of the space station, the app includes pictures, videos, detailed descriptions, and interactive media.
Information is provided in four separate sections: Experiments, Facilities, Benefits, and Media.
Under Experiments, users can read about the six categories of scientific experiments being conducted on the ISS, along with each of their subcategories. Web links, images, and publications are included wherever possible. Each experiment is discussed with in-depth information and is represented by a dot. Stems linking the dots show the length of time each experiment has been onboard.
To learn more about the space station’s structure, users can select each of the three ISS modules depicted in the Facilities section, which are Columbus, Destiny, and Kibo.
Clicking on a module enables users to view that module from different angles by dragging left, right, up, and down. Doing so provides a view of features not visible in the main menu. A click on an individual feature will give additional information on it and on any experiments being conducted there.
Those interested in learning about the ways the space station contributes to their everyday lives might be surprised when they click on the Benefits section. This part of the app details its impact in the areas of health, global education, and benefits to the Earth.
It is especially useful for cynics and people who may not understand why having a space station is important.
