KARACHI: The Customs Court approved physical remand of suspect namely Aziz Ullah son of Inayat Ullah and sent him back to customs lock-up, who was booked in a case of smuggling contraband goods into Pakistan.
On 30 September 2020, investigation officer submitted first information report (FIR) and also produced the above mentioned suspect and informed that on actionable information, officials of Directorate General, Intelligence & Investigation-Customs intercepted a Hino truck ten wheeler bearing registration no: TKG-235 and recovered non-duty paid foreign origin betel (Areca) nuts (cutted) 530 polypropylene bags (assorted weight and sizes) weighing 17,220 kg worth Rs13, 776,000 (approx market value) and wheat straw 64 polypropylene bags (assorted sizes weighing 512 kg.
He submitted that during the formalities, customs officials asked suspect to produce any lawful documents, however, he failed to produce any documents, therefore, after the formalities, customs officials seized said goods and also suspect was taken in customs custody.
He said that prosecution needs investigation from him for arrest of other culprits who are involved smuggling of said goods, therefore, court may send him back to customs department.
After the hearing, the court approved the above mentioned suspect and directed the investigation officer to produce him on the next date of hearing along with a progress report.
According to the first information report, case was registered for violation of under section 168 of the customs act, 1969, in violation of section 2(s) 156 (2) 157 (2) and 178 of the customs act, 1969 punishable under section 156 (1) and (89) ibid.
