ISLAMABAD: The ex-mill price of sugar in Sindh and Punjab has abruptly gone up by Rs 4 per kg with Karachi wholesale sugar now costing Rs 76 instead of Rs 72 per kilogram.

According to industry sources, the ex-mill price of sugar came down to less than Rs 70 per kg last week due to new crushing season and improved supply, but out of nowhere, prices in Sindh and Punjab were increased by Rs 4 per kg on Monday.

The ex-mill price of sugar in Sindh and Punjab has come close to Rs 74 per kg due to which sugar in the Karachi wholesale market has gone up to Rs 76.

Experts say that the possible reason behind price rise in Punjab might be increased fog in the province, which could have affected the supply but in Sindh, there is no justification for the sudden price rise.

There are concerns that if the price of sugar continues to rise at the wholesale level, retailers might also increase prices from the current level of Rs 80.
