Torkham customs foils bid to smuggle two black bear cubs from Afghanistan to Pakistan

PESHAWAR: Collectorate of Customs deputed at Torkham border crossing foiled a bid to smuggle two black bear cubs from Afghanistan into Pakistan.

According to sources, the cubs were recovered late on Saturday and shifted to the Peshawar Zoo in the early hours of Sunday after consultation with the provincial wildlife department.

It said both the cubs were hidden in a sack and found during checking of pedestrians. The animals are said to be in stable condition. Further investigations are still in  progress till the filing of this report.

Earlier on November 12, Directorate of Customs Intelligence and Investigation (I&I) have seized narcotics worth  Rs64 million and arrested two drug traffickers.

Director Customs Intelligence and Investigation Dr. Akhtar Hussain received secret information regarding smuggling of narcotics. He immediately passed on it to Anti-Smuggling Organization (ASO) who established check-post at Kohat Road and intercepted a Bedford truck.

During the checking, the ASO team found and seized charas 54 packets (62 kgs) along with Bedford truck bearing no: E-1530-Mardan, near Kohat Road, Peshawar.

The ASO also arrested two accused namely Arsalan Arshad and Nouman Ali resident of Jhelum, the total value of seized charas worth Rs62 million and vehicle value Rs3 million.

The case has been registered and further investigation is underway.
