Customs Court directs IO of Customs Preventive to arrest  culprits in foreign origin cloth smuggling scam

KARACHI: The Customs Court directed investigation officer of Collectorate of Customs Preventive to arrest owner, financiers, abettors and others including Al-Mustafa Daewoo Passenger Bus, who were allegedly booked in first information report (FIR) for smuggling of plain jersey cloth etc.

On 27 August 2021, investigation officer informs the court that an actionable information was received to the effect that Al-Mustafa Daewoo Bus bearing registration number LES-07-5355, loaded with smuggled/ non-duty paid foreign origin betel nuts and cloth, is arriving from Hub Chowki for delivery at Yousuf Goth, Karachi.

He added that on that information, customs officials intercepted said bus and during the search found 68 bags each containing 25 kg foreign origin betel nuts totaling 1700 kg valuing of Rs2,040,000, 7 rolls each weighing 06 kg containing velvet 9000 micro cloth, total worth Rs70,000. 110 rolls each weighing 805 kg containing plain jersey cloth total 900 kg worth Rs3,08,000.

He further informs that during the search, no legal documents have been produced, therefore, after the formalities, customs officials took legal action and lodged a first information report (FIR) against owners and facilitators of said goods including owner of said transporter.

According to the prosecution, cases were registered for violation of under section 2 (s), read with sections 16, 156(2), 157, 178 and 187 of the customs act, 1969 and the rules made thereunder, further read with section 3(I) of import & export control act, 1950.
