5 percent sales tax on petroleum products challenged in LHC

LAHORE: All Pakistan Anjuman e Tajiran Naeem Meer Group Friday approached Lahore High Court and challenged increase of 5 percent sales tax on petroleum products.

The federal government has issued a notification of increase in sales tax on petroleum from 17 percent to 22 percent. The petitioner argued in the petition that according to the Article 77 and Article 162 of the Constitution, the federal government cannot impose any new Tax. It is necessary to get approval of National Assembly before imposing any tax. The government has not discussed this SRO in Parliament even.

The Chairman Federal Board of Revenue, Chairman Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of parliament affairs have been made party in the petition.
