MULTAN: Directorate of Customs Intelligence and Investigation (I&I) has effectively thwarted a smuggling endeavor camouflaged under the guise of Afghan Transit Trade (ATT).
Director Muhammad Asif Khan Buzdar of Customs Intelligence and Investigation acted upon credible intelligence received from a dependable source, hinting at the illicit transportation of contraband items, notably a substantial quantity of betel nuts and Pomegranate Seeds (Anardana) concealed within a container.
Promptly responding to the tip-off, Customs Intelligence personnel conducted a thorough examination of a truck near Sher Shah road and confirmed the presence of betel nuts. Import documents purportedly for Pomegranate Seeds (Anardana) were associated with the container.
In a meticulously coordinated operation, a truck laden with counterfeit documents, purportedly ferrying goods from Afghanistan to India, was intercepted by Customs Intelligence personnel. Upon meticulous scrutiny, it was uncovered that the cargo harbored counterfeit items, including fake belts, evidently crafted to deceive customs authorities. During the examination by Customs Intelligence and Investigation, approximately 20 tons of betel nuts were discovered within the container.
The seized items, including smuggled tires and belts, valued at approximately 80 million rupees, were confiscated by Customs Intelligence under the guidance of Director Asif Abbas Khan and Additional Director Ali Mumtaz Raza. Superintendent Zia Bhatti, alongside Inspectors Muhammad Akbar, Zafar Iqbal, Hafiz Yunus, Sarmad Khalil, and others, played pivotal roles in foiling the smuggling attempt.
The apprehension of the driver involved marks a significant step in ongoing investigations, which aim to uncover further details pertaining to the operation.
