MULTAN: The Federal Tax Ombudsman (FTO) has stirred controversy by recommending that the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) grant its field formations access to bank software for monitoring and collecting withholding tax.

Critics allege that this recommendation could be influenced by the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Revenue, Ahad Cheema, who has previously faced references from the National Accountability Bureau (NAB). The suggestion has raised concerns about potential misuse and privacy breaches, sparking a heated debate among stakeholders.

The FBR is now under increased scrutiny as it navigates these controversial recommendations and addresses the concerns of various parties involved. The outcome of this debate will likely have significant implications for the future of tax administration in Pakistan.
