President seeks report on IRO post upgrade request

MULTAN: The All-Pakistan Inland Revenue Officers (IRO) Association has submitted a formal request to upgrade the IRO post from Grade 16 to Grade 17, prompting action from the President’s House. In response, President Asif Ali Zardari has instructed the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Chairman to provide a detailed report on the matter.

Tahir Khakwani, the association’s central chief organizer, communicated the request to President Zardari, emphasizing the need for a long-awaited upgrade and regularization of posts across the country’s FBR offices. The association argues that the current grading does not reflect the complexity and importance of the Inland Revenue Officers’ roles, which are critical to national revenue collection.

Khakwani also requested a meeting with the President, proposing a delegation of 12 association officials representing different FBR offices. This meeting aims to personally convey the significance and urgency of the upgrade request.

Due to President Zardari’s official commitments, the meeting is yet to be scheduled. However, the President’s House has initiated the process by seeking a formal response from the Secretary of the Revenue Division and the FBR Chairman through letter number 5(11)/2024-EA.

The association’s plea underscores broader concerns among Inland Revenue Officers regarding recognition and career progression. The proposed upgrade to Grade 17 is viewed as essential to acknowledge their contributions and enhance motivation within the department. The FBR, a pivotal body in Pakistan’s revenue generation, depends on its officers to enforce tax policies, ensure compliance, and manage revenue collection. The association contends that upgrading their posts would align their positions with their responsibilities, boosting their effectiveness in serving the nation.

As the President’s House awaits the FBR’s report, Inland Revenue Officers remain hopeful for a positive outcome that addresses their longstanding demand. The decision could set a precedent for addressing similar issues of recognition and advancement for government officials based on their duties and performance.
