LAHORE: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has decided to shift the responsibility of customs enforcement from the Directorate General of Customs Intelligence to Customs Field Formations across the country, sources revealed.

According to sources, this change does not indicate any dismantling of the Directorate General of Customs Intelligence, as it will continue to operate with a focus on its core responsibilities. The sources further clarified that reports suggesting the closure of Customs Intelligence offices and the removal of check-posts are unfounded.

The sources emphasized that the Directorate General will still play a critical role in alerting authorities and taking action against smuggling activities.

However, they noted that the transfer of enforcement responsibilities is aimed at reducing duplication of efforts between the Directorate General of Customs Intelligence and the Customs Field Formations, which have sometimes hampered anti-smuggling operations.

In response to concerns regarding this restructuring, sources indicated that a special campaign will be launched to enhance the prevention of smuggling within the country. The changes are expected to streamline operations, ensuring better coordination between various customs bodies in Pakistan.
