ISLAMABAD: The National Highway Authority (NHA) has announced a significant revision to its toll structure across Pakistan’s motorway network, introducing a substantial 50% surcharge for all vehicles that do not possess active M-Tags or maintain an insufficient balance. These revised rates are set to take effect from June 15, 2025.
Additional charges for non-M-Tag vehicles
Under the new policy, vehicles operating on the motorway network without an active M-Tag or with a low balance will be charged 50% more than the standard toll rate. This adjustment, authorized under Section 10(2)(vii) of the NHA Act (1991), is primarily aimed at actively promoting the widespread use of M-Tags to streamline toll collection processes and alleviate congestion at toll plazas nationwide.
Revised Toll rates across major routes
The updated toll rates for various key motorway sections, which include the 50% surcharge for non-compliant vehicles, are as follows for cars:
M-2 (Lahore – Islamabad): Rs. 1,800
M-3 (Lahore – Abdul Hakeem): Rs. 1,200
M-4 (Pindi Bhattian – Multan): Rs. 1,600
M-5 (Multan – Sukkur): Rs. 1,800
M-14 (D.I. Khan – Hakla): Rs. 1,000
E-35 (Hasan Abdal – Mansehra Expressway): Rs. 450
Higher Rates for Commercial Vehicles
Commercial vehicles will also face significant toll increases if they are not M-Tag compliant. Notable examples for the Lahore – Islamabad (M-2) section include:
2 & 3 axle trucks: Rs. 7,900
Articulated trucks: Rs. 10,200
These figures reflect the revised pricing, which incorporates the substantial 50% penalty for vehicles found to be non-M-Tag compliant or having an insufficient balance.
Implementation & public advisory
The NHA has issued directives to all relevant departments and toll collection partners to update their systems and strictly enforce the new rates beginning mid-June. Motorists are being strongly advised to ensure their vehicles are equipped with active M-Tags and have sufficient balance to avoid incurring these additional charges.
For comprehensive details, the NHA has circulated an official notification and made the complete revised toll chart available on its official website. Authorities have emphasized that this step is crucial for modernizing toll operations and significantly enhancing overall motorway efficiency across the country.
