ISLAMABAD: HBL Microfinance Bank (HBL MfB) and the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to integrate satellite-based agricultural analytics into the lending ecosystem in a landmark move for Pakistan’s agricultural finance sector.

This first-ever partnership between a bank and SUPARCO will help leverage space technology for climate-smart agriculture financing, marking a new chapter in data-driven rural development.

As part of the collaboration, the two organisations will roll out a pilot project in Punjab’s Okara District—one of the province’s key agricultural hubs. Using high-resolution satellite imagery, the project will enable remote pre-loan assessments, crop health monitoring, yield estimation, risk profiling, and farm-level credit scoring. A secure API and dashboard will feed this intelligence directly into HBL MfB’s lending systems, eliminating the need for manual field verification.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Amir Khan, President & CEO of HBL MfB, said; “We are proud to be the first microfinance bank in Pakistan to collaborate with SUPARCO for Climate-Smart Agri Financing. This innovation will integrate satellite-powered analytics into agricultural lending, benefiting both our clients and the sector. Together, we are sowing the seeds of a smarter, data-backed future for Pakistan’s agriculture.”

Zafar Iqbal, Member (SAR) at SUPARCO, noted; “SUPARCO has long been at the forefront of applying satellite technology for national development. This partnership brings our Agricultural Geographic Information System into the financial sector for the first time, enhancing lending processes and supporting rural uplift.”

The next phase of the partnership will introduce post-loan satellite monitoring, enabling HBL MfB to track crop activity in real time, detect anomalies early, and strengthen risk management.

Industry experts say the initiative could redefine microfinance lending in Pakistan, positioning HBL MfB and SUPARCO as pioneers in satellite-enabled agri-financing and setting the stage for more sustainable, transparent, and climate-resilient farming practices nationwide.
