ISLAMABAD: Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Chairman Rashid Mahmood Langrial has said that individuals flaunting luxury cars, designer clothing and high-end properties on social media are now under active scrutiny as the tax authority intensifies its crackdown on evasion.

He revealed that notices have already been issued to 30 people who declared comparatively low incomes while showcasing a lavish lifestyle online. Daily updates on enforcement actions are being compiled, he added.

Langrial told reporters that the long-standing price gap between taxed and untaxed sugar has now been eliminated. He urged the public to report anyone hoarding untaxed sugar, cautioning that strict penalties await violators.

He also highlighted strong gains in revenue collection from the sugar industry, noting a year-on-year increase of Rs40 billion in sales tax. A dedicated chief commissioner for enforcement has been appointed to lead nationwide anti-evasion operations.

Turning to smuggling, the FBR chairman said robust measures are being implemented to curb the movement of illicit goods. He noted that smugglers had recently targeted customs personnel, resulting in the deaths of two officials, but stressed that the crackdown would continue unabated.
