KARACHI: The federal government has made a key decision regarding Afghan transit trade, allowing all Afghan cargo currently stuck at Karachi and Gwadar ports to be re-exported. Under the new arrangement, traders will have the flexibility to send their Afghan transit consignments through any seaport of their choice.

Sources said the Ministry of Commerce has granted a special exemption from paragraph 46(4) of the Import Policy Order 2022 to facilitate the process. In addition, the commerce minister has formally written to the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to ensure the decision is implemented without delay.

The move is aimed at easing bottlenecks created after trade routes were disrupted.

It is noteworthy that Pakistan had earlier closed the Torkham and Chaman border crossing points for commercial activity.

The crossings were shut indefinitely from October 12 due to the security situation, halting the flow of transit trucks between the two neighboring countries.
