KARACHI: Pakistan Customs, operating through the Air Cargo Control Unit (ACCU) at the Collectorate of Customs (Airports), Karachi, has successfully thwarted an attempt to smuggle a large quantity of marijuana into the country via the International Mail Office (IMO), Karachi.
According to officials, the contraband was detected during routine examination and risk profiling of international mail consignments. The suspicious parcel, which originated from the United States, was falsely declared as containing “books” in an apparent attempt to evade customs checks. Upon detailed inspection, customs officers recovered approximately 1.03 kilograms (gross weight) of marijuana concealed inside the parcel.
The seized narcotics have been assessed to have a market value of Rs. 30.716 million. The consignment was immediately taken into custody, and further legal proceedings have been initiated under the relevant provisions of customs and anti-narcotics laws. Investigations are also underway to identify the individuals and networks involved in the attempted smuggling.
Customs officials stated that the seizure highlights Pakistan Customs’ sustained vigilance and proactive enforcement against smuggling through all possible routes, including international postal and courier channels. The operation reflects the department’s commitment to strengthening border controls, disrupting illicit trade networks, and safeguarding public health and safety.
The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) reiterated its resolve to curb smuggling, corrupt practices, and illegal trade. By intensifying enforcement measures and improving intelligence-based operations, the FBR aims to protect government revenue and contribute to the stability and growth of the national economy.
