KARACHI: Pakistan’s 5G rollout has officially entered a decisive phase. Jazz, Ufone, and Zong have formally committed to the process. They recently submitted their pre-bid earnest money to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA). The highly anticipated 5G spectrum auction is scheduled for March 10.
Each operator submitted $15 million. Consequently, the three major operators deposited a combined total of $45 million. This officially sets the stage for the upcoming bidding process. With all three leading operators in the race, Pakistan’s transition toward 5G connectivity is now in a critical and competitive phase.
Official sources state that the government aims to generate over $600 million from this auction. However, achieving this target depends entirely on competitive bidding and final spectrum pricing.
Meanwhile, PTA has outlined clear minimum success criteria. The regulator is offering a total of 597 MHz of spectrum. To deem the 5G spectrum auction successful, buyers must purchase at least 50% of this total.
This translates to an allocation of roughly 300 MHz. Since Jazz, Ufone, and Zong are actively participating, the sale of approximately 300 MHz is expected. This will effectively meet the regulator’s minimum threshold.
Industry stakeholders, investors, and policymakers are closely watching this March 10 milestone. Ultimately, this auction will determine the pace of Pakistan’s 5G deployment. This next-generation network will deliver ultra-fast broadband speeds and low latency. Furthermore, it will unlock critical opportunities in IoT, smart infrastructure, digital services, and industrial innovation.
