ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Uzbekistan agreed to deepen economic cooperation across multiple sectors, including trade, industry and investment, during a meeting between Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production Haroon Akhtar Khan and Governor of Uzbekistan’s Navoiy Region Normat Tursunov.
The Uzbek side proposed exporting live animals from Pakistan, a proposal that was discussed in detail during the meeting held in Islamabad. Both sides also identified pharmaceuticals, leather and related industrial sectors as priority areas for future cooperation.
Officials further emphasised the need to strengthen Business-to-Business (B2B) linkages and increase meat exports as part of efforts to expand bilateral trade and improve regional economic connectivity.
The meeting was attended by senior officials from both countries, including Ambassador Alisher Tukhtaev, Deputy Governor Elbek Gaffarov and Embassy official Ravshan Jumanov on the Uzbek side.
Pakistan was represented by Secretary Industries and Production and Food Security Saif Anjum, Additional Secretary Asif Saeed Lughmani, Joint Secretary Freedoon Akram Sheikh and other senior officials.
Haroon Akhtar Khan conveyed goodwill messages from Pakistan and reiterated Islamabad’s commitment to expanding trade ties in line with the government’s regional connectivity agenda. He also informed the delegation that a high-level Pakistani visit to Uzbekistan is planned soon to further explore investment opportunities.
The discussions were framed within broader efforts to enhance bilateral economic engagement and formalise cooperation across emerging sectors.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the SAPM presented a souvenir to Governor Tursunov as a gesture of goodwill, with both sides exchanging warm remarks and reaffirming their intent to strengthen economic relations.
