ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved a comprehensive six-point action plan aimed at resolving thousands of long-pending tax cases and reforming the country’s tax litigation system.
The decision was taken during a high-level meeting focused on improving the performance of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and addressing delays in tax dispute resolution.
The Prime Minister expressed satisfaction over the ongoing digitalization of FBR and directed authorities to implement all approved measures within strict timelines to ensure tangible results.
A central feature of the reform package is the strengthening of the Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanism, which will allow faster settlement of tax disputes outside the courts. Officials said the enhanced ADR system is expected to reduce the burden on the judiciary and significantly speed up case resolution.
The meeting also approved the launch of a Centralized Litigation Management System (CLMS), a digital platform designed to streamline tax case data, improve tracking, and ensure timely follow-ups. The system is expected to enhance transparency and efficiency in handling tax-related litigation.
Through CLMS, authorities will be able to monitor case progress more effectively, improve coordination, and minimize delays in decision-making.
Officials further informed that ADR forums have already contributed to the recovery of Rs. 24 billion for the national exchequer during the current fiscal year by resolving tax disputes.
The meeting was attended by key cabinet members, including Muhammad Aurangzeb, Ahsan Iqbal, Attaullah Tarar, Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan, Minister of State for Finance Bilal Azhar Kayani, along with senior officials and task force members.
