ISLAMABAD: The federal government will present the Budget 2026-27 in the National Assembly on June 12, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry confirmed on Tuesday.
He said Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb will lay the budget before the lower house of parliament.
The schedule has been revised multiple times, with the presentation first planned for June 5, then moved to June 10, and now finally set for June 12 following consultations with coalition partners.
The decision comes after the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), a key ally of the ruling coalition, assured the government of its support for the budget’s passage, according to sources.
A high-level meeting between a PPP delegation led by President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the Aiwan-e-Sadr reportedly resulted in broad agreement on most budgetary proposals. However, officials said a few outstanding issues will be resolved through continued talks at the technical level.
During the meeting, President Zardari stressed the importance of prioritising public welfare, provincial rights, and economic stability in the upcoming fiscal plan. He also urged that growth strategies be aligned with citizen-focused development goals, according to a statement from the President’s House.
Sources said earlier delays in the budget schedule were due to objections from coalition partners over certain proposals, prompting further negotiations before finalisation.
Finance Minister Aurangzeb has previously stated that the government is working to build consensus with allies and stakeholders, including the International Monetary Fund (IMF). He said the budget aims to strengthen tax administration, widen the tax base, and improve enforcement, while avoiding the imposition of new taxes where possible.
He added that the government is trying to balance fiscal consolidation with political agreement and economic stability.
Under constitutional requirements, the budget must be approved by June 30 to come into effect from July 1.
According to budget documents, the government has proposed a development outlay exceeding Rs1.1 trillion for the fiscal year 2026-27, covering various sectoral allocations.
