World’s largest container ships arrive at Karachi Port as capacity expands

KARACHI: Karachi Port has achieved another major milestone as one of the world’s largest container vessels, MSC Loreto, arrived at the port, highlighting the expansion of Pakistan’s maritime handling capabilities.

According to Karachi Port Trust (KPT) sources, the ultra-large container vessel, measuring approximately 399.9 meters in length and capable of carrying 24,346 containers, berthed at South Wharf Berth No. 2 of the SAPTL terminal.

The vessel arrived carrying 14,538 containers, while 3,802 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) will be offloaded at the SAPTL terminal during its stay.

A spokesperson for Karachi Port Trust said the port now has the capability to safely and efficiently handle some of the world’s largest container ships, reflecting improvements in infrastructure and operational capacity.

The spokesperson added that MSC Loreto will remain at Karachi Port for two days before departing for the United Arab Emirates.
