KHUZDAR: The Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) has resolved long-standing regulatory issues surrounding the Barite Lead Zinc Project in Balochistan’s Khuzdar district, enabling a strategic investment of $200 million and advancing one of Pakistan’s largest mineral development initiatives.
The project, which has remained on the SIFC’s agenda since December 2023, is being developed by Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) in a joint venture with Bolan Mining Enterprises (BME). PPL serves as the project operator and holds a 50 percent working interest.
Located in the mineral-rich district of Khuzdar, the Barite Lead Zinc Project is estimated to contain 69 million tons of mineral reserves and is expected to remain operational for 34 years, making it one of the country’s significant long-term mining ventures.
According to official estimates, the mine is expected to generate annual revenues ranging from $150 million to $230 million. The project is also anticipated to boost mineral exports, create employment opportunities, and contribute to the economic development of Balochistan.
SIFC said it facilitated the resolution of long-pending mining lease issues, allowing the project to move into the implementation phase. A major milestone was achieved when the Operational Agreement was signed during the Pakistan Minerals Investment Forum 2025.
The government stated that the project’s progress reflects ongoing efforts to improve Pakistan’s investment climate by removing regulatory barriers, facilitating strategic investments, and accelerating the responsible development of the country’s mineral resources.
Officials added that the initiative demonstrates SIFC’s role in attracting foreign and domestic investment, strengthening investor confidence, and supporting long-term economic growth through the mining sector.
