ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has allowed eligible individuals in Pakistan to pay sales tax on imported mobile phones in monthly instalments to facilitate the registration of unregistered devices.

Under the revised procedure, sales tax on imported mobile phones can be paid in equal monthly instalments over the remaining months of the financial year.

Applicants must select the instalment payment option when submitting their registration request through the Device Identification Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS).

The number of instalments will correspond to the number of months remaining in the financial year in which the application is submitted.

The first instalment must be paid through the Payment Slip Identification (PSID) generated at the time of application. Subsequent instalments must be paid monthly by their respective due dates through separate PSIDs.

All instalments must be paid by June 30. Applicants will also have the option to pay their outstanding instalments before their due dates.

However, failure to pay an instalment on time will result in the applicant being declared a defaulter. In such cases, the mobile phone may be classified as unregistered and blocked through DIRBS.

The revised procedure further states that any delay in payment will make the entire remaining sales tax immediately payable, while the facility to pay in instalments will be withdrawn.

The revised mechanism provides eligible users with an alternative to paying the full sales tax upfront, while making timely payments essential to maintaining their devices’ registration status.
