IGN reports you can grab the first chapter now, but the Comixology and Google Play links don’t seem to work for me yet. You may have better luck outside Australia.

Writer Shawn Kittelsen, who has played every Mortal Kombat game, worked with NetherRealm on Injustice: Gods Among Us during his time as a creative executive at DC, and was invited to write the comic having moved on.

The comic is set several years before Mortal Kombat X, which is itself set 25 years after 2011′s Mortal Kombat. The first issue kicks off with Scorpion, one of the best known faces of the franchise, and Kenshi. Later issues will feature new characters D’vorah, Kotal Khan and Cassie Cage, among others.

“Just because you see a character in the comic, that doesn’t guarantee you’ll see them in the game,” Kittelsen said.

“The end of MK 2011 had some major ramifications for this universe, and even 15 years later, those events weigh heavily on our characters.”

Mortal Kombat X is coming to PC, PlayStation 3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One in April.
