COLOMBO: UK would support Sri Lanka to have the European Union’s ban on fish exports from this country lifted. British High Commissioner to Sri Lanka John Rankin assured Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa on Wednesday that ban came into effect this month following the Fisheries Ministry’s failure to implement the recommendations the EU Commission made in 2012 for establishing a sustainable fisheries industry in the island.
UK’s support would be extended to Sri Lanka at the EU meeting to be held in March this year. At the meeting with Minister Rajapaksa, High Commissioner Rankin expressed his appreciation of the steps the Lankan government is taking to economically develop the country, and assured Britain’s support for such endeavours.
