China to construct ‘Maritime Silk Road’ to connect countries in South China Sea

CHINA: China’s Ministry of Transport has planned its vision for the shipping industry in the year 2020 as to take measures and to develop a road towards success for China’s global competitiveness.

According to Seatrade Global, a seven-page guideline released by the ministry outlines China’s focus for sharpening technology and innovation in the sector. The ministry also plans to give shipping enterprises a better advantage by improving policies. Further developments will be made to insurance services, information technology, research and development and shipping indices.

There will also be a focus on people and bringing in the most talented staff into the sector. This will include: upgrading skills and strengthening company management systems. China is also planning to construct a ‘Maritime Silk Road’ in its attempt to connect countries in the South China Sea by reviving historic trading linkages. In response, India has moved to counter China’s plan with its ‘Project Mausam’, which aims to revitalise its own economic and cultural ties with Asian countries.
