Detroit Motor Show: Chevrolet uncovers 2016 Volt electric car, covers 200 miles on single charge

DETROIT: General Motors’ Chevrolet division has unveiled 2016 Volt electric car featuring sleek sporty design and all-electric range of 50 miles.

The car will be powered by 18.4 kWh lithium battery which was jointly developed by General Motors and LG Chem.

The number of cells used in the battery has been reduced to 192 cells, but the capacity has been increased. The overall mass of the package has also become 9.8 kg lighter than its predecessor.

The Volt also features two-motor drive unit which claimed to provide increased efficiency, performance and reduction in noise and vibration.

With the use of the two motors, the car can provide 19% improvement in electric acceleration and will be capable of accelerating from 0-60mph in 8.4 seconds.

Chevrolet has given a muscular design to the 2016 Volt with dynamic shape along with carved body sides and fenders that blend into the hood.

On the Inside, the 2016 Volt will be able to accommodate five passengers.

It also features dual digital color displays with an eight-inch-diagonal reconfigurable screen, and an additional eight-inch-diagonal touch screen in the center of the instrument panel.

Chevrolet has also introduced GPS location-based charging where owners can set their charging preferences exclusively for “home” charging.

The company has also equipped the car with intuitive charge status indicators and a new 120V portable cord.

For safety the car maker has used rear-vision camera, ten standard air bags along with departure warning, side blind zone alert with lane change alert, rear cross traffic alert.

GM North America president Alan Batey said: “The 2016 Chevrolet Volt provides our owners with a no-compromise electric driving experience.

“We believe our engineering prowess combined with data from thousands of customers allows us to deliver the most capable plug-in vehicle in the industry.”
