ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif took notice of the poor governance in Balochistan province, whose share of Pakistan’s national income has historically ranged between 3.7% to 4.9%, and directed the provincial government to ensure good governance.

He was chairing a meeting on Balochistan’s situation at the Prime Minister’s House here before leaving for Saudi Arabia to attend the funeral of King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz. He said the government is providing increased funds for the development of the province with particular focus on infrastructure development.

The premier noted that the province was an important part of the country and the federal and provincial governments should work in coordination for optimum utilisation of the mineral resources of the province. He added the development of the Gwadar Port and construction of Pak-China Economic Corridor would bring a wave of prosperity to the people of Balochistan.

Since 1972, Balochistan’s gross income has grown in size by 2.7 times.[23] Outside Quetta, the resource extraction infrastructure of the province is gradually developing but still lags far behind other parts of Pakistan.
