Indian Customs observes Int’l Customs day, vows to meet all challenges

VASCO: Indian Customs commemorates International Customs Day. In main ceremony Goa University Vice-Chancellor Dr Satish Shetye emphasized that Commissionerate of Customs, Central Excise and Service Tax should be equipped to meet all challenges from within and outside the country.

Addressing the International Customs Day function organised by Commissionerate of Customs, Central Excise and Service Tax Goa at customs office at Mormugao Harbour on Tuesday evening as the chief guest, Dr Shetye said that many people in India are reeling under extreme hunger which needs to be eliminated first only then the country will advance economically. He also stressed on creating 10 million jobs for youth to meet the challenges of unemployment.

Commissioner of customs A Anpazhakan and joint commissioner G B Santimano were among others present on the occasion. Theme of International Customs Day this year is ‘Coordinated border management – an inclusive approach for connecting stakeholders’.

Recalling the history of organising International Customs Day, Commissioner of customs Anpazhakan called for effectiveness and efficacy of officials of Customs department in order to enhance revenue collection. He also said that customs is an important arm that helps enhance national security.

Anpazhakan said, “India is a vast country with a long coastline and the customs protect about 200 nautical miles of exclusive economic zone. It also coordinates with other departments for protecting the country’s border. Coordinated efforts of the Commissionerate of Customs, Central Excise and Service Tax with other departments have helped in delivering better services.”

On the occasion, prizes were distributed to children of personnel of the department who performed well in various competitions at the hands of the chief guest Dr Shetye. Assistant commissioner Francis Rodrigues gave a talk on International Customs Day. A dance performance was presented by children of staff members. Staff members Edwin Braganza, Mario Furtado and M D Naik sung songs on the occasion. Earlier the function was inaugurated by lighting the traditional lamp at the hands of Dr Shetye. The function was compared by Pamela Martins while G B Santimano proposed the vote of thanks.
