Hunter residents urged to think about impact of kitchen sink on wetlands

LONDON: The residents of Hunter are being urged to review what they tip down their drains as part of World Wetlands Day.

The Ramsar Convention, an international treaty to protect and conserve wetlands, was signed 44 years ago today, with the Hunter Estuary Wetlands added to the list in 1984.

Wetland Care Australia’s Louise Duff said despite the agreement, the problems facing the region’s wetlands are not unique.

“Newcastle Wetland’s a bit of a microcosm of what’s happening around the world,” she said.

“They’re having major development infrastructure put in them, transport corridors put through them, they have to soak up the pollutants that come from urbanisation, car pollution, waste water going into the system, and global warming as well is affecting wetlands.”
