Afghanistan needs neighbours’ cooperation to curb border smuggling: Ashraf Ghani

KABUL: Afghanistan’s President Ashraf Ghani said that his government will take stern action to dismantle goods’ smuggling through his country and stressed on the need of cooperation from other countries to address the menace.

He was talking to a five-member delegation of Pakistan Afghanistan Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PAJCCI) in Kabul, and discussed matters of mutual interests, besides explore ways and means how to enhance existing trade and investment ties between the two countries.

President Ghani attached high importance to involvement of credible partners in Afghanistan’s economic activities. He said expansion of legal trade between Afghanistan and Pakistan would result prosperity for both nations.

Highlighting economic opportunities emerging in Afghanistan, Ghani said the government of Afghanistan was determined to ensure all facilities for domestic and international investments in Afghanistan. He hoped required facilities for Afghan traders in other countries could also be provided.

Appreciating the effective role being played by PAJCCI, he advised to ask Pakistani government to expedite work on various pacts and assurances given by Pakistani authorities during his visit to Pakistan in November 2014.

The government of Afghanistan is determined to ensure all facilities for domestic and international investments in Afghanistan.

PAJCCI delegation led by President Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) Iftikhar Ahmed Vohra representing founding President PAJCCI Zubair Motiwala said suggested an amount of $100 being charged by Afghan Customs authorities on each container entering Afghanistan from Pakistan might kindly be waived off whereas condition to submit 110 percent transit guarantee on Pakistani shipments destined to CIS countries via Afghanistan should also be withdrawn.
