Argentina exports 137,200 tonnes of fish from January to April 2015

BUENOS AIRES: Argentina exported 137,200 tonnes of fish products from January to April this year, 1.2 per cent more than in the same quarter of 2014.

These exports totalled $408.7 million, an amount that represents an increase of 4.7 per cent year on year.

According to the latest situation report, prepared by the Directorate of Fisheries Economics from the Undersecretary of Fisheries, 25,158 tonnes of shrimp (Pleoticus muelleri) were sold abroad.

This amounts to 31.3 per cent more than in the first quarter of 2014 (19,847 tonnes). These shipments were sold for $158.9 million, an increase of 22.6 per cent year on year.

In addition, Argentina increased export volumes of stripe (Potamotrygon brachyura), with 5,372 tonnes shipped (67.5 per cent increase), and hoki (Macruronus magellanicus), with 4,703 tonnes (42.8 per cent more) shipped.

In value terms, exports for stripe rose 85 per cent to $10.1 million and for hoki were down 25.2 per cent to $9.2 million.

In the case of hake (Merluccius hubbsi), exports generated revenues of $65.1 million, 22.5 per cent less than in the same quarter of 2014 ($84 million). The volume of hakeexports contracted by 23.7 per cent to 25,901 tonnes.

Argentina also saw a drop in the value of exports of squid (Illex) in the first four months of 2015, totalling $43.2 million, although the export volume grew by 2.3 per cent to 39,643 tons.

Between January and April this year, Argentina sent abroad 3,640 tons of corvina (Micropogonias furnieri), 42.6 per cent less than in the same period of 2014. The value of these shipments fell 38.5 per cent to $5.1 million.
